Spool or Refill? Choosing the Right Bambu Lab Filament Option
Should you buy Bambu Lab filament on a spool or as a refill? We explain the difference, the savings and how reusable spools work.
Most Bambu Lab filaments in our shop come in two versions, Filament with spool and Refill. Here's how to pick.
What a refill is
A refill is the same 1kg of filament, wound neatly but without the plastic spool. You clip it into a Bambu reusable spool, which snaps apart and goes back together in seconds.
Why refills make sense
- Cheaper per roll. You're not paying for another spool every time.
- Less plastic waste. Empty spools pile up fast on a busy printer.
- Same AMS compatibility once it's on a reusable spool.
When to buy the spool version
- Your first roll, if you don't own a reusable spool yet.
- When you want to keep several colours loaded and ready.
- High-temperature materials. Check that your reusable spool is rated for them.
Our advice
Buy two or three reusable spools, then switch to refills for the colours you use most. It pays for itself within a few rolls. Browse both options in the shop.
