3D Printer Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your Printer Running Smoothly

Simple weekly, monthly and occasional maintenance jobs that prevent failed prints, clogged nozzles and costly repairs on Bambu Lab and other FDM printers.

Most failed prints aren't the printer's fault โ€” they're down to a dirty plate, damp filament or a worn part. A few minutes of maintenance saves hours of frustration.

Every few prints

  • Clean the build plate. Wash it with warm water and washing-up liquid, or wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Fingerprint grease is the number one cause of poor adhesion.
  • Remove stray filament from around the nozzle, purge chute and poop chute.

Every month

  • Check the nozzle for buildup or wear. Abrasive filaments such as carbon fibre wear brass nozzles quickly โ€” use hardened steel.
  • Clean the rods or rails and check belts are evenly tensioned.
  • Run the printer's calibration routines after any hardware change.
  • Look at the AMS feeders and PTFE tubes for dust or filament shavings.

Every few months

  • Replace the carbon or air filter if your printer has one.
  • Lubricate rods and lead screws as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Inspect the hotend and wiping area, and replace worn parts.

Don't forget the filament

Store filament sealed with desiccant. Damp filament causes stringing, bubbling and weak parts โ€” dry it before printing.
