Laser Engraving — What It's Good For, and What It Isn't

A practical guide to laser engraving and cutting: the materials that work, the ones that don't, typical turnaround, and how to prepare a design.

Laser engraving burns your design permanently into the material. There's no ink to fade, nothing to peel off — the mark is the material itself. That permanence is exactly why people choose it for gifts, memorials, tools and signage.

Engraving vs cutting vs marking

  • Engraving removes a shallow layer to leave a recessed, contrasting mark.
  • Cutting goes all the way through — shapes, letters, panels, inlays.
  • Marking changes the surface colour without removing much material, which is how we get crisp dark text on coated metals.

Materials that laser beautifully

  • Wood and plywood — rich dark contrast, the classic look
  • Slate — engraves to a bright, chalky white
  • Acrylic — frosted engraving, or flame-polished cut edges
  • Leather — deep, tactile detail on tags and wallets
  • Anodised and coated metals — sharp, high-contrast marking
  • Glass — frosted etch on bottles, tumblers and awards

Materials we won't laser

PVC and vinyl release chlorine gas that damages the machine and is genuinely dangerous, so we never cut them. Polycarbonate discolours badly and cuts poorly. Anything with an unknown coating we'll test on a scrap first rather than guess.

What makes a good design

High contrast, bold line weights, and vector artwork where possible. Very fine hairlines can burn away; very large solid black areas take a long time and can scorch the surrounding material. Photographs can be engraved, but they need converting to a dithered greyscale first — we handle that, and we'll send you a preview before we commit it to your item.

Turnaround

Most single items are engraved and out the same or next working day from our Aberbeeg workshop. Larger batches for businesses — staff awards, branded tools, hospitality signage — usually run within a week, and we can hold your artwork on file so repeat orders are one email.

Browse the Laser Engraved Products category, or tell us what you're after and we'll quote it. If you're combining engraving with a 3D printed part, we can do both under one roof.
